There's no second thought to why the Taj Mahal stands high on the list of the "Wonders of the World" - everything about the Taj is so enthralling that you can't help yourself from admiring it time and again. Be it the distinctive monumental structure or the luscious green gardens, the calligraphy and intricate paintings on the walls or the beautiful motifs and lattice - Taj Mahal is all about appreciating the bewildering efforts of all those who gave rise to it. The best time to visit the Taj would be during the first flush of morning when the mausoleum is at its glorious best and the crowd is at its minimum. To catch a breathtaking view of the masterpiece from afar, do visit Mehtab Bagh which lies bang opposite to the Taj.

-Taj Mahal is open six days a week to the public, Saturday through Thursday.

-Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays for general viewing and is opened on Friday afternoon only for those who have to attend prayers at the Taj Mosque.

-Taj Mahal is open from sunrise to sunset during normal operating days.

-There is no limit to how long tourists may stay inside the monument complex within the normal operating hours.

Tickets may be purchased at all three Taj Mahal entry gates.

Taj Mahal Western Gate: Tickets are available near Saheli Burj from Sunrise to Sunset.

Taj Mahal Eastern Gate: Tickets are available at Shilpgram (about 750 meters from Eastern Gate of Taj Mahal), from Sunrise to Sunset.

Taj Mahal Southern Gate: Tickets are available directly at the Southern Gate entry, from 8:00 A.M. To 5:00 P.M.

There are separate queues for Foreign tourists and Domestic tourists and signs will direct you accordingly.

1. Foreign tourist : 1000/-
2. Citizens of SAARC and BIMSTEC Countries : 530/-
3. Domestic/Indian Rs. 40/-

Only one official website, asi.payumoney.com, offers information and ticketing service for Taj Mahal tickets. Both foreign and domestic visitors may use the e-ticket booking for the ASI Taj Mahal monument as well as Humayun’s Tomb in Delhi.

When you go, make sure you are accompanied by a very competent guide, which makes all the difference in the world. Your guide will presumably try to get you there for the sunrise view, shuttling you and bypassing all the peddlers and scammers, and getting a rickshaw for Rs 100 to get you to the gate as quickly as possible. At the gate, your guide will buy you tickets and also get you shoe covers. You will then get in line according to gender and whether you are Indian or foreigner (make sure you get in the right line to avoid delays at the security check). The door opens at 5:30AM, but the lines already form by 5:15AM. Everyone will then go through security checks. If you don't want to be stuck at the security line for 10 minutes, DO NOT BRING ANY BAGS to be checked by x-ray and then again by hand. You can carry a water bottle and a camera in your hands and avoid the bag search line which can be chaotic.
